Automatic calculation and railway tank car calibration

RTC Online is an online calculator that automatically computes the volume and mass of petroleum product in a railway tank car from product level, temperature and density.

Tank car calibration tables

Railway tank car calibration is based on capacity (gauge) tables: every centimetre of product level maps to an exact volume. The service ships with a directory of calibration tables for common tank car types and interpolates intermediate values automatically.

GOST R 8.595-2004

The Russian standard for measuring the mass of oil and petroleum products. It defines the indirect static measurement method: volume from the calibration table, density referred to the measurement temperature, and mass calculation.

ASTM D1250 / Table 54B and VCF correction

The international Petroleum Measurement Tables. Table 54B defines the Volume Correction Factor (VCF) used to refer the product volume to the standard temperature of 15 °C based on actual temperature and density.

Who is it for

Oil depots and terminals

Receiving and dispatching petroleum products: instant conversion of product level into tonnes using calibration tables.

Surveyors and inspectors

Independent cargo quantity control during transshipment: GOST and ASTM compliant calculation with a PDF measurement report.

Traders and cargo owners

Verify cargo mass in transit and at handover without site visits — measurement data is all you need.

Railway operators and carriers

Loading records across your tank car fleet: shared tank car type directories for the whole team.

Frequently asked questions

What data is needed to calculate petroleum mass in a tank car?

The tank car type (calibration table), product level in centimetres, product temperature and density. The calculator automatically determines the volume from the calibration table and computes the mass with VCF correction.

Which tank car types are supported?

The directory includes calibration tables for common railway tank car types. If yours is missing, send us its calibration table and we will add it.

Can I upload my own calibration tables?

Yes. We configure calculations for your vessels: tank cars, stationary storage tanks, ship tanks. Contact us — rtc@doniss.ee.

Which standard is used — GOST or ASTM?

Calculations follow GOST R 8.595-2004 with ASTM D1250 tables (Table 54B) applied for temperature volume correction (VCF). The methods are used together.

Does the calculator work offline?

Yes. RTC Online is an offline-capable app (PWA): measurements are stored on the device and synchronized with the server when connectivity returns. An Android app is available.

How much does RTC Online cost?

The base version is free: registration takes a minute and no installation is needed — the calculator runs in the browser.

What is VCF and why is Table 54B needed?

VCF (Volume Correction Factor) refers the petroleum product volume to the standard temperature of 15 °C. ASTM D1250 Table 54B defines the VCF from product density and actual temperature — without it the mass would be miscalculated.
